How we started
In 1999 a group of citizens meeting to discuss the increasing drug and alcohol problem within our community and the crime-related results took on the structure of a coalition and adopted the name Blair Countians for Drug Free Communities. As a result of this move, the coalition developed bylaws, membership guidelines and committees to address the increasing problems associated with drug and alcohol use in our community.
In 2000, the coalition applied for and received is first grant from the U.S Department of Justice, Drug Free Communities grant. It has since been awarded 4 subsequent grants and currently has expanded its ability to provide services to the community through collaborative partnerships. The following are the current goals that have been adopted by the coalition:
• Reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults; and
• Establish and strengthen collaboration among communities partners to support the efforts of the coalition to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth.
